00HOUSE BILL NO. 290 01 "An Act relating to a state employment preference for service with the Alaska 02 National Guard or the Alaska Naval Militia." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 39.25.159(c) is amended to read: 05  (c) In this section, 06  (1) "disabled veteran" means a veteran who is entitled to compensation 07 under laws administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, a person 08 who was honorably discharged or released from active duty because of a 09 service-connected disability, or a person who was disabled in the line of duty while 10 serving in the Alaska Territorial Guard, the Alaska National Guard, or the Alaska 11 Naval Militia; 12  (2) "prisoner of war" means a person who has been a prisoner of war 13 during a declared war or other conflict as determined by the Department of Defense 14 under federal regulations;

01  (3) "veteran" means a person 02  (A) with 181 days or more active service in the armed forces 03 of the United States who has been honorably discharged after having served 04 during any period 05  (i) between April 6, 1917, and December 1, 1919, 06 between September 16, 1940, and December 31, 1947, or between 07 June 27, 1950, and October 14, 1976; [OR] 08  (ii) in which the person was awarded a campaign badge, 09 expedition medal, the Purple Heart, or an award or decoration for 10 heroism or gallantry in action; 11  (B) who served 181 days or more in the Alaska Territorial 12 Guard; or 13  (C) with 20 years of satisfactory service in the Alaska 14 National Guard, the Alaska Naval Militia, or a combination of service in 15 the guard and the militia.
