00SENATE BILL NO. 380                                                                                                     
01 "An Act requiring a local contribution to the operating costs of the University                                         
02 of Alaska; and providing for an effective date."                                                                        
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
04    * Section 1.  AS 14.40 is amended by adding a new section to read:                                                   
05  Sec. 14.40.025.  REQUIRED LOCAL CONTRIBUTION.  (a)  A municipality                                                    
06 in which a campus of the University of Alaska is located shall, by the equivalent of                                    
07 a tax levy on real or personal property or both, contribute to the general fund in each                                 
08 fiscal year at least 8.5 percent of the operating budget for that campus in the prior                                   
09 fiscal year funded from the general fund.                                                                               
10  (b)  The legislature may                                                                                              
11   (1)  appropriate funds contributed under this section to the operating                                               
12 budget of the University of Alaska campus located in the municipality from which the                                    
13 funds are contributed; and                                                                                              
14   (2)  reduce funds appropriated to the operating budget of a campus of                                                



01 the University of Alaska if the campus is located in a municipality that has failed to                                  
02 make the local contribution required under this section; a reduction under this                                         
03 paragraph shall be equal to the amount by which the municipality fails to make the                                      
04 required local contribution under this section.                                                                         
05    * Sec. 2.  This Act takes effect July 1, 1994.
