00HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 11 01 Designating the month of March as "Women's History Month." 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS American women of every race, class, and ethnic background have made 04 significant contributions to the growth and strength of our country; and 05 WHEREAS American women have performed and continue to perform important 06 cultural, economic, and social roles in every domain of society by constituting a large portion 07 of the labor force inside and outside the home; and 08 WHEREAS American women have provided the majority of the volunteer labor force 09 of the nation and established many of the longstanding charitable, philanthropic, and cultural 10 institutions in America; and 11 WHEREAS American women of every race, class, and ethnic background served as 12 leaders of every major social change crusade throughout our country's history, such as the 13 suffrage, equal opportunity, abolitionist, labor, civil rights, and peace movements; and 14 WHEREAS, in spite of these contributions, traditional history texts and courses have

01 focused primarily on political, military, and economic events, virtually excluding women from 02 being recognized in proper historical context; and 03 WHEREAS by expanding the focus of history in the curriculum to include the 04 activities and contributions of women in this country from all walks of life, we give to 05 children, male and female alike, expectations that match the realities of the world they will 06 face as adults; 07 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature designates March as "Women's 08 History Month" and 09 (1) urges schools, municipalities, civic organizations, and other public and 10 private agencies and individuals to observe the month with activities that are appropriate for 11 increasing recognition of the role of women in both the history and current events of our 12 country; and 13 (2) requests the Governor to issue a proclamation calling on the people of the 14 state to observe the month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.
