00HOUSE BILL NO. 250 01 "An Act relating to centralized correspondence study; and providing for an 02 effective date." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 14.07.020(a)(9) is amended to read: 05  (9) provide accredited elementary and secondary correspondence study 06 programs available to any Alaskan through a centralized [OFFICE OF] correspondence 07 school [STUDY]; 08 * Sec. 2. AS 14.16 is amended by adding a new section to read: 09 ARTICLE 2. CENTRALIZED CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOL. 10  Sec. 14.16.100. CENTRALIZED CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOL. The state 11 centralized correspondence school is a public school of the state. The provisions of 12 AS 14.17.082 apply with respect to the operation and management of the state 13 centralized correspondence school as if it were a school district. 14 * Sec. 3. AS 14.17.010 is amended to read:

01  Sec. 14.17.010. PUBLIC SCHOOL FOUNDATION ACCOUNT. (a) The 02 public school foundation account is established. The account consists of appropriations 03 for distribution to school districts, the state boarding school, and for the centralized 04 correspondence school [STUDY PROGRAMS UNDER THIS CHAPTER]. 05  (b) The money of the account may be used only in aid of public schools, 06 including community school programs, and for the centralized correspondence school 07 [STUDY PROGRAMS AS PROVIDED BY THIS CHAPTER]. 08 * Sec. 4. AS 14.17.022 is amended to read: 09  Sec. 14.17.022. MONEY FOR CENTRALIZED CORRESPONDENCE 10 SCHOOL [STUDY]. Money for the state [PROVIDING] centralized correspondence 11 school [STUDY PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS NOT ENROLLED IN AN 12 APPROVED SCHOOL DISTRICT CORRESPONDENCE STUDY PROGRAM] 13 includes an allocation from the public school foundation account in an amount 14 calculated by multiplying the instructional unit value in AS 14.17.056 by the total 15 number of instructional units, as determined by applying the number of correspondence 16 students to the formula [FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS] in AS 14.17.041(b) 17 [AS 14.17.041(b)(1)], then multiplying that product by 65 percent. 18 * Sec. 5. AS 14.30.010(b)(10) is amended to read: 19  (10) is enrolled in 20  (A) the state boarding school established under AS 14.16; or 21  (B) a full-time program of correspondence study approved by 22 the department; in those school districts providing an approved correspondence 23 school [STUDY PROGRAM], a student may be enrolled either in the district 24 correspondence program or in the centralized correspondence school [STUDY 25 PROGRAM]; 26 * Sec. 6. This Act takes effect July 1, 1993.
