00                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 3                                                                        
01 Relating to nonprofit, nongovernmental organization support for veterans in Alaska.                                     
02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE:                                                                                           
03       WHEREAS Alaska has the highest ratio of veterans in the United States; and                                      
04       WHEREAS veterans from Alaska have served the nation with the highest degree of                                  
05 sacrifice and valor and veterans' families have also made great sacrifices in service to the                          
06 nation; and                                                                                                             
07       WHEREAS there are high rates of mental health issues and suicide among veterans;                                
08 and                                                                                                                     
09       WHEREAS the rates of homelessness among veterans in Alaska is unacceptable; and                                 
10       WHEREAS many nonprofit, nongovernmental organizations support job training and                                  
11 mental health services for veterans, as well as facilitating the transition into civilian life after                    
12 service; and                                                                                                            
13       WHEREAS residents of Alaska generously contribute to nonprofit, nongovernmental                                 
14 organizations with the intent to help veterans located in Alaska; and                                                   
15       WHEREAS significant amounts of funds raised in Alaska for veterans are used by                                  
16 nonprofit, nongovernmental organizations for purposes that do not directly support veterans                             
01 located in Alaska;                                                                                                      
02       BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate strongly supports nonprofit, nongovernmental                                     
03 organizations that aid veterans; and be it                                                                              
04       FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate strongly encourages, to the greatest extent                                    
05 possible, nonprofit, nongovernmental organizations to use funds raised in Alaska for veterans                           
06 through the generosity of Alaska residents to aid veterans in Alaska; and be it                                         
07 FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate strongly encourages nonprofit,                                                       
08 nongovernmental organizations to openly disclose, for the funds each donor contributes to aid                           
09 veterans, the percentage of those funds that is used to aid veterans in Alaska and the purpose                          
10 for which the funds are used.
