01 Expressing support for federal legislation establishing a United States Department of Defense                           
02 regional center for security studies in the state.

04 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE:                                                                                         
05      WHEREAS the United States military recognized the strategic significance of the                                    
06 Arctic at the 2019 Alaskan Command Arctic Symposium held at the University of Alaska                                    
07 Fairbanks; and                                                                                                          
08      WHEREAS, as this state is the only Arctic state in the United States and the only                                  
09 reason the United States is an Arctic nation, it would be wise for the United States to increase                        
10 its focus on the North; and                                                                                             
11      WHEREAS the bill currently designated as S. 2707 in the United States Senate would                                 
12 establish a United States Department of Defense regional center for security studies in the                             
13 state; and                                                                                                              
14      WHEREAS S. 2707 would name the regional center for security studies the "Ted                                       
15 Stevens Arctic Center for Security Studies";                                                                            
16      BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska Senate supports the passage of S. 2707.                                             
17      COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Donald J. Trump, President                                
01 of the United States; the Honorable Mark Esper, United States Secretary of Defense; and the                             
02 Honorable Lisa Murkowski and the Honorable Dan Sullivan, U.S. Senators, and the                                         
03 Honorable Don Young, U.S. Representative, members of the Alaska delegation in Congress.
