00 SENATE BILL NO. 196 01 "An Act relating to wearing or carrying tribal regalia and objects of cultural 02 significance at public events; and providing for an effective date." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04  * Section 1. AS 18.80 is amended by adding a new section to read: 05 Sec. 18.80.257. Tribal regalia at public events. (a) A state agency, a 06 municipality, the University of Alaska, or a school district may not prohibit an 07 individual from wearing tribal regalia or wearing or carrying objects of traditional 08 cultural significance at a public event. 09 (b) In this section, 10 (1) "public event" includes an award ceremony, a graduation 11 ceremony, a public meeting, or another event held or sponsored by a state agency, a 12 municipality, the University of Alaska, or a school district; 13 (2) "state agency" has the meaning given in AS 40.21.150; 14 (3) "tribal regalia" means clothing, accessories, and objects of cultural 01 significance worn or carried during traditional tribal ceremonies, celebrations, or 02 gatherings. 03  * Sec. 2. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to 04 read: 05 NOTIFICATION. The Department of Administration shall send either a written or 06 electronic copy of this Act to each federally recognized tribe in the state. 07  * Sec. 3. This Act takes effect immediately under AS 01.10.070(c).
