00 SENATE BILL NO. 123 01 "An Act establishing May 10 of each year as Alaska Mining Day." 02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03  * Section 1. AS 44.12 is amended by adding a new section to read: 04 Sec. 44.12.094. Alaska Mining Day. Alaska Mining Day is established on 05 May 10 of each year to recognize and honor the intrepid individuals and industry that 06 played an enormous role in developing and settling the territory and the state and that 07 continue to contribute to the economy of the state. Mining served as a driving force 08 behind the creation of the Alaska Railroad in the early twentieth century, and 09 continuing development of the mineral resources of the state, including rare earth 10 minerals, contributes to the security and economy of the state and the nation. Alaska 11 Mining Day may be observed by educational and celebratory events, projects, and 12 activities to increase public awareness of and appreciation for mining and miners in 13 Alaska and the many uses for the minerals mined in the state.
