00 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 18 01 Relating to the case of U.S. v. Hasan and to the decision of the Judge Advocate General 02 of the United States Army with respect to that case. 03 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 WHEREAS, on November 5, 2009, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, M.D., entered his 05 workplace, the Soldier Readiness Processing Center in Fort Hood, Texas, with two concealed 06 weapons; and 07 WHEREAS, Mr. Hasan cried out "Allahu Akbar," which means "Allah is greatest," 08 and opened fire on military personnel and civilian employees; and 09 WHEREAS, Mr. Hasan shot and killed 12 unarmed soldiers, a civilian, and an unborn 10 child, namely Chief Warrant Officer (retired) Mike Cahill, Maj. Libardo Caraveo, Staff Sgt. 11 Justin Decrow, Capt. John Gaffaney, Spc. Frederick Greene, Spc. Jason Hunt, Staff Sgt. Amy 12 Krueger, Pfc. Aaron Nemelka, Pfc. Michael Pearson, Capt. Russell Seager, Lt. Col. Juanita 13 Warman, Pfc. Kham Xiong, and Pfc. Francheska Velez, who was pregnant at the time of her 14 death; and 15 WHEREAS, Mr. Hasan wounded 29 others, including persons attempting to give 16 medical aid to the wounded; and 01 WHEREAS Mr. Hasan had prior connections with Anwar al-Awlaki, a known al- 02 Qaeda terrorist; and 03 WHEREAS Mr. Hasan has been known to make statements sympathetic to Islamic 04 extremist ideologies and actions; and 05 WHEREAS Mr. Hasan, by committing these crimes on a military base and against 06 military personnel, perpetrated an act of terrorism against the United States; and 07 WHEREAS this act of terrorism by Mr. Hasan, an American citizen and a member of 08 the United States armed forces, constitutes treason; 09 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature urges the Judge Advocate 10 General of the United States Army to consider all of the evidence and, if justified by the 11 evidence, carefully consider the death penalty as a sentencing option for Nidal Malik Hasan. 12 A COPY of this resolution shall be sent to Lieutenant General Dana K. Chipman, 13 Judge Advocate General of the United States Army.
