00 SENATE BILL NO. 31 01 "An Act relating to truancy." 02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03  * Section 1. AS 14.30.030 is amended to read: 04 Sec. 14.30.030. Prevention and reduction of truancy. The governing body of 05 a school district, including a regional educational attendance area, shall establish 06 procedures to prevent and reduce truancy. The procedures must include a definition  07 of 'unexcused absence' and provide for the following interventions:  08 (1) for one unexcused absence in a month, notification of the  09 parent or guardian;  10 (2) for two to four unexcused absences in the same month, a  11 conference with the parent or guardian to discuss solutions to prevent truancy of  12 the student;  13 (3) for five or six unexcused absences in the same month, more  14 severe steps to end the truancy problem of the student, including entering into a  15 written family agreement, referring a family for needed social services, or filing a  01 petition with the appropriate court to enforce compulsory school attendance  02 laws; and  03 (4) for seven or more unexcused absences in a month or 10 or  04 more unexcused absences in a school year, a petition to the court for a  05 determination of juvenile delinquency under AS 47.12 or protection as a child in  06 need of aid under AS 47.10.
