00 SENATE BILL NO. 156 01 "An Act relating to limitations on studded tires and on the use of certain 02 studded tires; prohibiting certain trade practices regarding studded tires; and 03 providing for an effective date." 04 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 05 * Section 1. AS 28.35.155(b) is repealed and reenacted to read: 06  (b) The studs in a studded tire on a motor vehicle being driven, operated, or 07 moved on a paved highway or paved vehicular way or area may not 08  (1) protrude more than one-fourth inch from the tire surface; 09  (2) individually weigh more than 1.1 grams for a studded tire on a 10 motor vehicle other than a commercial motor vehicle; 11  (3) individually weigh more than 3.0 grams for a studded tire on a 12 commercial motor vehicle. 13 * Sec. 2. AS 28.35.155 is amended by adding new subsections to read: 14  (c) A person may not operate a motor vehicle equipped with studded tires on 01 a paved highway or a paved vehicular way or area if the studs in the tires are heavier 02 than the weight allowed by (b) of this section. 03  (d) In this section, 04  (1) "commercial motor vehicle" has the meaning given in 05 AS 19.10.399; 06  (2) "studded tire" means a tire with metal studs imbedded in the 07 periphery of the tire surface. 08 * Sec. 3. AS 45.45.200 is amended by adding a new subsection to read: 09  (f) A shop may not sell or offer for sale a studded tire, or install studs in a tire 10 for a customer, unless each stud weighs not more than 1.1 grams for a tire used on a 11 motor vehicle other than a commercial motor vehicle or 3.0 grams for a tire used on 12 a commercial motor vehicle. In this subsection, 13  (1) "commercial motor vehicle" has the meaning given in 14 AS 19.10.399; 15  (2) "studded tire" means a tire with metal studs imbedded in the 16 periphery of the tire surface. 17 * Sec. 4. This Act takes effect July 1, 1998.
