00 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 43 01 Urging the United States Congress to amend copyright laws to allow more 02 extensive satellite service in Alaska. 03 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 WHEREAS many state residents have only severely limited access to local and 05 national television broadcasting; and 06 WHEREAS better access to local and national television broadcasting would allow for 07 better communication within the state; and 08 WHEREAS more competition in programming will ultimately bring better service and 09 lower costs to state residents; and 10 WHEREAS current federal copyright laws impose charges on the rebroadcast of local 11 programming by satellite that do not apply equally to other methods of rebroadcast; 12 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature urges the United States Congress 13 to amend the federal copyright laws to allow satellite television service in Alaska to 14 rebroadcast local programming throughout the state on an equal footing with other methods 01 of rebroadcasting. 02 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the 03 United States; the Honorable Conrad Burns, Chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Science, 04 Technology and Space; the Honorable W. J. "Billy" Tauzin, Chair of the House Subcommittee 05 on Telecommunications, Trade and Consumer Protection; and to the Honorable Ted Stevens 06 and the Honorable Frank Murkowski, U.S. Senators, and the Honorable Don Young, U.S. 07 Representative, members of the Alaska delegation in Congress.
