01 "An Act relating to registration of vehicles owned by disabled persons or persons                                       
02 who are 65 years of age or older; and providing for an effective date."                                                 
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                               
04    * Section 1.  AS 28.10.108 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:                                          
05  (l)  Notwithstanding the other provisions of this section, the following vehicles                                     
06 are not required to be registered biennially and shall be registered one time only:                                     
07   (1)  a vehicle qualifying for registration under AS 28.10.181(d); or                                                 
08   (2)  a vehicle owned by a person who is 65 years of age or older; this                                               
09 paragraph applies to only one vehicle owned by the person who is 65 years of age or                                     
10 older.                                                                                                                  
11    * Sec. 2.  AS 28.10.411(f) is amended to read:                                                                     
12  (f)  A resident 65 years of age or older on January 1 of the year the vehicle is                                      
13 registered is entitled to an exemption [ONCE EACH BIENNIAL REGISTRATION                                                 
14 PERIOD] from the registration fee required under this section for one [MOTOR]                                           
01 vehicle subject to registration under AS 28.10.421(b)(1), (2), (5), or (6).  An exemption                               
02 may not be granted except upon written application for the exemption on a form                                          
03 prescribed by the department.                                                                                           
04    * Sec. 3.  This Act takes effect July 1, 1998.
