00 SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 9 01 Supporting line item veto power for the President of the United States. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS the governors of most states may exercise a line item veto power whereby 04 they may strike or reduce items in appropriation bills; and 05 WHEREAS the governor of the State of Alaska has the line item veto power and has 06 frequently exercised that power; and 07 WHEREAS the line item veto has proven to be a valuable tool in controlling the 08 budget in Alaska, enabling the governor to reduce or eliminate certain appropriation items 09 while leaving funding for other items intact; and 10 WHEREAS the national deficit continues to grow despite efforts to control deficit 11 spending by the United States Congress; and 12 WHEREAS, if the President of the United States could exercise a line item veto over 13 appropriations, the level of spending by the federal government would be more easily 14 controlled; 01 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature supports efforts to amend the 02 United States Constitution to grant the President of the United States the power to exercise 03 a line item veto over appropriations. 04 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the 05 United States; the Honorable Al Gore, Vice-President of the United States and President of 06 the U.S. Senate; the Honorable Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives; 07 and to the Honorable Ted Stevens and the Honorable Frank Murkowski, U.S. Senators, and 08 the Honorable Don Young, U.S. Representative, members of the Alaska delegation in 09 Congress.
