00 HOUSE BILL NO. 174                                                                                                      
01 "An Act relating to the appointment and removal of the commissioner of                                                  
02 education; and providing for an effective date."                                                                        
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
04    * Section 1.   AS 14.07.145(a) is amended to read:                                                                   
05  (a)  The board shall appoint the commissioner of education subject to the                                             
06 approval of the governor.  The commissioner is [SHALL BE] the principal executive                                     
07 officer of the department and serves at the pleasure of the governor.                                                 
08    * Sec. 2.  AS 14.07.145(c) and 14.07.145(f) are repealed.                                                            
09    * Sec. 3.  This Act takes effect immediately under AS 01.10.070(c).
