00 SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 37 01 Proposing amendments to the Constitution of the State of Alaska relating to 02 elections of the governor and lieutenant governor and changing the term of office 03 of the governor and the lieutenant governor. 04 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 05 * Section 1. Article III, sec. 3, Constitution of the State of Alaska, is amended to read: 06  SECTION 3. ELECTION. The governor shall be chosen by the qualified 07 voters of the State at a general election. The candidate receiving the greatest number 08 of votes equal to or greater than forty percent of the total number of votes cast 09 for governor shall be governor. If no candidate receives at least forty percent of 10 the votes cast for governor, a runoff election between the two candidates receiving 11 the greatest number of votes cast shall be held on the first Tuesday in December 12 following the general election. 13 * Sec. 2. Article III, sec. 4, Constitution of the State of Alaska, is amended to read:  SECTION 4. TERM OF 14 OFFICE. If a runoff election is required to elect 01 a governor, then the [THE] term of office of the governor begins [IS FOUR YEARS, 02 BEGINNING] at noon on the second day of January immediately after the election. 03 Otherwise, the term of office of the governor begins at noon on the first Monday 04 in December following the governor's [HIS] election. Election for governor occurs 05 every four years [AND ENDING AT NOON ON THE FIRST MONDAY IN 06 DECEMBER FOUR YEARS LATER]. 07 * Sec. 3. The amendments proposed by this resolution shall be placed before the voters of 08 the state at the next general election in conformity with art. XIII, sec. 1, Constitution of the 09 State of Alaska, and the election laws of the state.
