00 SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 33 01 Relating to the development of the Windy Craggy ore deposit. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS the state has a mineral policy that encourages environmentally responsible 04 economic development in order to maintain a sound economy and stable employment within 05 the state for the benefit of present and future generations and to encourage economic 06 development and cooperation between the state's mineral industry and Pacific Rim nations; 07 and 08 WHEREAS the Windy Craggy ore deposit is located in northwest British Columbia, 09 Canada, 90 miles from Haines, Alaska, which is the nearest location for a port site and general 10 staging area for development of the deposit; and 11 WHEREAS the development and mining of the Windy Craggy ore deposit would 12 provide jobs and contribute substantially to the growth and diversification of the economy of 13 the southeastern part of the state; and 14 WHEREAS current environmental laws and regulations of the United States federal 01 government, Alaska, the Canadian federal government, and British Columbia establish 02 standards that ensure environmentally responsible development; 03 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature finds that the development of 04 the Windy Craggy ore deposit in an environmentally sound manner is in the best interest of 05 the state. 06 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Right Honorable M. Brian Mulroney, 07 Prime Minister of Canada; the Honorable David C. Lam, Lieutenant Governor of the Province 08 of British Columbia; and to the Honorable Ted Stevens and the Honorable Frank Murkowski, 09 U.S. Senators, and the Honorable Don Young, U.S. Representative, members of the Alaska 10 delegation in Congress.
