00 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 44 01 Proposing amendments to the Constitution of the State of Alaska relating to the 02 duration of a term in office for a legislator. 03 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. Article II, sec. 3, Constitution of the State of Alaska, is amended to read: 05  SECTION 03. ELECTION AND TERMS. Legislators shall be elected at 06 general elections. Their terms begin on the fourth Monday of the January 07 following election unless otherwise provided by law. The term of representatives 08 shall be four [TWO] years, and the term of senators, six [FOUR] years. One-half of 09 the representatives [SENATORS] shall be elected every two years. Every two years 10 on a rotational basis the following number of senators shall be elected: six, seven, 11 and seven. 12 * Sec. 2. Article XV, Constitution of the State of Alaska, is amended by adding a new 13 section to read: 14  SECTION 29. TRANSITION IN DURATION OF LEGISLATIVE TERMS OF 01 OFFICE. Notwithstanding Section 3 of Article II, as amended in 1994, the terms of 02 all legislators expire at the end of the Nineteenth Legislative Session. Not later than 03 March 15, 1995, for purposes of the 1996 general election, the governor shall designate 04 terms for legislative office by district as follows: 05  (1) one-half of the members of the house of representatives shall be 06 elected to serve two-year terms and one-half shall be elected to serve four-year terms; 07  (2) six members of the senate shall be elected to serve two-year terms, 08 seven members shall be elected to serve four-year terms, and seven members shall be 09 elected to serve six-year terms. 10 * Sec. 3. The amendments proposed by this resolution shall be placed before the 11 voters of the state at the next general election in conformity with art. XIII, sec. 1, Constitution 12 of the State of Alaska, and the election laws of the state.
