MEMBERSHIP REPUBLIC OF CHINA/TAIWAN) as the first order of business before the Senate State Affairs Committee. The chairman calls Representative Vezey to testify. Number 012 REPRESENTATIVE VEZEY, Chairman, House State Affairs Committee, sponsor of HJR 63, states passing HJR 63 is the right thing to do. Chairman Vezey gives the committee reasons for passing HJR 63, as listed in the information in the member's bill files. Chairman Vezey states Taiwan is Alaska's fifth largest trading partner. No other nation of this status is not a member of the U.N. It would certainly be in Alaska's interest to promote Taiwan's diplomatic recognition. CHAIRMAN LEMAN asks if there are any questions and if anyone else wishes to testify on HJR 63. Number 046 SENATOR MILLER makes a motion to discharge HJR 63 from the Senate State Affairs Committee with individual recommendations. CHAIRMAN LEMAN, hearing no objection, orders HJR 63 released from committee with individual recommendations. Number 051 CHAIRMAN LEMAN calls a brief at ease. Number 052 CHAIRMAN LEMAN brings up HB 323 (RELEASE OF CERTAIN DEATH CERT. INFO) as the next order of business before the Senate State Affairs Committee. The chairman states the bill has been heard before in committee. Number 062 SENATOR MILLER makes a motion to adopt the committee substitute to HB 323. Number 064 CHAIRMAN LEMAN asks if there are any objections to the adoption of the committee substitute. Hearing none, the chairman states the cs has been adopted. The chairman notes that the cs adds a section two, stating that Life Alaska and other harvesters will not be allowed to use fetal tissue or organs. Under section 3, the department will not be allowed to release information that would facilitate such a gift. CHAIRMAN LEMAN asks Representative Toohey if she has any objections to these additions. REPRESENTATIVE TOOHEY responds she does not have any objections to the additions. CHAIRMAN LEMAN asks Mr. Zangri if the Department of Health & Social Services has any comment on the committee substitute. AL ZANGRI, Department of Health & Social Services, Division of Public Health, says the department does not have any problem with the committee substitute.
