Members absent were Representative Phillips, Davies, and Willis. CO-CHAIRMAN IVAN IVAN introduced Ervin Martin, Director, Division of Emergency Services, Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Number 033 ERVIN MARTIN Director, Division of Emergency Services, Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, stated he supports Alaska Statute (A.S.) 26.23.050 relating to state disaster funds and recommends that A.S.26.23.050 be kept intact. Mr. Martin stated the Division of Emergency Service is currently seeking outside funding such as federal, private and corporation grants. The Division has handled over 126 disasters and Mr. Martin was prepared to address the 1994, Interior floods with a slide presentation. Number 125 PETE WUERPEL, State Coordinating Officer, Division of Emergency Services, Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, presented a slide review of the 1994 Yukon Koyukuk Flood which included several phases referred to in the context of emergencies; response, recovery, and mitigation. The slide review summarized chronologically the phases in context with the 1994, Yukon Koyukuk flood area and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) generated programs. MR. WUERPEL, briefly addressed the decision and selection process for the general contractor hired. MR. WUERPEL reiterated Mr. Martin's comments regarding the Division of Emergency Services seeking additional outside funds and the state of Alaska needing to insure A.S. 26.23.050 is maintained in its present form. Number 465 CO-CHAIRMAN IVAN asked if any members had questions and thanked Mr. Wuerpel for the presentation. Number 471 MR. MARTIN, stated that there were copies of the briefing available for anyone interested. Number 501 CO-CHAIRMAN IVAN announced the conclusion of Division of Emergency Services, Department of Military and Veterans Affairs overview. He stated an overview is scheduled for the next committee meeting from the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs with General Jake Lestenkof on Monday, February 13, 1995, at 5:00 p.m. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to come before the House Special Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs, CO-CHAIRMAN Ivan adjourned the meeting at 5:45 p.m.
