HOUSE SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON FISHERIES February 17, 1997 5:05 p.m. COMMITTEE CALENDAR PRESENTATION: UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA FAIRBANKS, SCHOOL OF FISHERIES AND OCEAN SCIENCES * HOUSE BILL NO. 73 "An Act extending the termination dates of the salmon marketing programs of the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute and the salmon marketing assessment; and providing for an effective date." - BILL HEARING POSTPONED (* First public hearing) TAPE(S) 97-3, SIDE(S) A CALL TO ORDER Representative Ivan, Vice Chairman, convened the House Special Committee on Fisheries meeting at 5:05 p.m. PRESENT Committee members present at the call to order were Representatives Ivan and Ogan. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION VERA ALEXANDER, Representative, School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, University of Alaska Fairbanks, described the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences' Strategic Plan and Agenda in the coming year. She answered questions regarding the environment and the effects of fishing. SCOTT SMILEY, Director, Kodiak Fisheries Industrial and Technologies Center, described the development of a new fisheries technology building in Kodiak and answered questions pertaining to the activities that will occur in the new center. DAN OGG, Vice President, Board of Regents, School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, University of Alaska Fairbanks, discussed the importance of investments and funding for the future of the fisheries. HEATHER McCARTY, Chairman, Advisory Counsel, Kodiak Fisheries Industrial and Technologies Center, discussed the work of the center and answered questions regarding the marketing of fish. COMMITTEE ACTION The committee took no action. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 5:40 p.m. NOTE: The meeting was recorded and handwritten log notes were taken.
