Another basic service the state must provide its citizens is ensuring Alaskans have access to the quality of education they deserve. To meet this, nearly $18 million in additional funding for school districts throughout the state is provided in the budget bill for formula funded programs. The "agency operations" budget bill provides an additional $5 million for the University of Alaska to meet the increased demands of its growing student enrollment. The challenge to meet the basic needs of Alaskans will grow more difficult as the state's oil revenues decline. I look forward to working with the Legislature in meeting this challenge. Additional information pertaining to the appropriations requested in this bill are being furnished to the Legislature by my Office of Management and Budget. Sincerely, /s/ Walter J.
