00 SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 19 01 Relating to governance of the University of Alaska. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS, in January 2019, the University of Alaska Anchorage School of 04 Education lost accreditation; and 05 WHEREAS the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, in a letter to 06 the University of Alaska Board of Regents, chancellors, and president, dated September 26, 07 2019, expressed concern that University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of Alaska 08 Anchorage, and University of Alaska Southeast had failed to meet accreditation standard 09 2.A.1, requiring a system of governance with clearly defined authority, roles, and 10 responsibilities; and 11 WHEREAS the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities requested that 12 the University of Alaska take action to address accreditation concerns regarding the 13 University's structure of governance; and 14 WHEREAS the University of Alaska Anchorage Faculty Senate adopted a resolution 15 recommending that the University of Alaska Board of Regents revise university policy, 16 making the chancellors of University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of Alaska Anchorage,

01 and University of Alaska Southeast co-equal with the University of Alaska President and 02 answerable solely to the Board of Regents; 03 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature recommends that the 04 chancellors of University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of Alaska Anchorage, and 05 University of Alaska Southeast report directly to the University of Alaska Board of Regents. 06 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Board of Regents of the University of 07 Alaska; Daniel M. White, Chancellor, University of Alaska Fairbanks; Cathy Sandeen, 08 Chancellor, University of Alaska Anchorage; Rick Caulfield, Chancellor, University of 09 Alaska Southeast; and Jim Johnsen, President, University of Alaska.
