00 SENATE BILL NO. 45 01 "An Act relating to the imposition of term limits on school board members; and relating 02 to municipalities." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 14.08.061(c) is repealed and reenacted to read: 05 (c) The voters residing within a regional educational attendance area may 06 propose imposing term limits on the regional school board members by petition. A 07 petition under this subsection must be filed with the director of elections and must 08 contain signatures of qualified voters in the area equal to eight percent of the total 09 votes cast in the most recent regional school board election. The imposition of term 10 limits on regional school board members is subject to approval by a majority of the 11 qualified voters voting on the question in the regional educational attendance area at 12 the next regular school board election, or a special election called for that purpose, and 13 takes effect at the next regular regional school board election. 14 * Sec. 2. AS 14.12.050(c) is amended to read:

01 (c) Nothing in this section prevents a city or borough from imposing term 02 limits on school board members under AS 29.20.300 [SCHOOL BOARD 03 MEMBERS FROM SUCCEEDING THEMSELVES]. 04 * Sec. 3. AS 29.10.200 is amended by adding a new paragraph to read: 05 (68) AS 29.20.300(c) (school board term limits). 06 * Sec. 4. AS 29.20.300 is amended by adding a new subsection to read: 07 (c) A municipality may limit the total number of terms or consecutive terms a 08 member may serve on a school board. A term limit provision taking effect on or after 09 January 1, 2020, must be enacted by ordinance ratified by the voters.
