01 "An Act establishing a museum grant program in the Department of Commerce,                                              
02 Community, and Economic Development."                                                                                   
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
04    * Section 1. AS 14.57 is amended by adding new sections to read:                                                   
05                 Article 4. Museum Matching Grant Program.                                                             
06 Sec. 14.57.300. Museum matching grant program. (a) A matching grant                                                   
07 program is established in the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic                                           
08 Development for museum construction, expansion, and major renovation projects                                           
09 approved under this section and for costs related to the repatriation of Native artifacts                               
10       by museums. The department may not accept an application for a grant under this                                   
11       section unless the legislature makes an appropriation for the grant program.                                      
12            (b)  A person in charge of construction, expansion, or major renovation of or                                
13       repatriation of Native artifacts held by an eligible museum may apply to the                                      
14       department for a matching grant under regulations adopted by the department.                                      

01            (c)  The department shall award not more than 50 percent of the total proposed                               
02       grant project costs to an eligible applicant.                                                                     
03 (d)  In this section, "major renovation" means a significant physical upgrade                                           
04 that allows a museum to better preserve artifacts and present artifacts to the public or                                
05 to improve space to allow a museum to provide improved educational services to the                                      
06       public.                                                                                                           
07            Sec. 14.57.305. Eligibility. A museum may be eligible to receive a grant award                           
08       under AS 14.57.300 if the museum applies for a grant on a form approved by the                                    
09       department and                                                                                                    
10                 (1)  is located in the state;                                                                           
11                 (2)  is eligible to receive state grant funds; and                                                      
12                 (3)  provides matching funds from other sources in an amount equal to                                   
13       at least 50 percent of the total proposed grant project costs.                                                    
14            Sec. 14.57.350. Definitions. In AS 14.57.300 - 14.57.350,                                                  
15                 (1)  "department" means the Department of Commerce, Community,                                          
16       and Economic Development;                                                                                         
17                 (2)  "museum" means                                                                                     
18                      (A)  a museum as defined in AS 14.57.290; and                                                      
19                      (B)  a cultural center used to exhibit, care for, or store                                         
20            collections that is open to the public.
