01 "An Act relating to an exemption from jury duty for teachers; and amending Rule 15(l),                                  
02 Alaska Rules of Administration."                                                                                        
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
04    * Section 1. AS 09.20.030(b) is amended to read:                                                                   
05            (b)  A person may claim exemption and shall be excused by the court from                                     
06       service as a juror during the school term if it is shown that the person is a teacher [IN                         
07       A SCHOOL THAT IS DESIGNATED AS A LOW PERFORMING SCHOOL                                                            
08       UNDER REGULATIONS ADOPTED BY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION                                                         
09       AND EARLY DEVELOPMENT]. In this subsection, "teacher" means a person who                                          
10       serves a school district in a teaching capacity in a classroom setting and is required to                         
11       be certificated in order to hold the position.                                                                    
12    * Sec. 2. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to                          
13 read:                                                                                                                   
14       INDIRECT COURT RULE AMENDMENT. AS 09.20.030(b), as amended by sec. 1                                              

01 of this Act, has the effect of amending Rule 15(l), Alaska Rules of Administration, by                                  
02 establishing an additional cause for excusal from jury service.                                                         
03    * Sec. 3. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to                          
04 read:                                                                                                                   
05       CONDITIONAL EFFECT. AS 09.20.030(b), as amended by sec. 1 of this Act, takes                                      
06 effect only if sec. 2 of this Act receives the two-thirds majority vote of each house required by                       
07 art. IV, sec. 15, Constitution of the State of Alaska.
