01 "An Act relating to a voluntary preference for veterans and for spouses and domestic                                    
02 partners of veterans by private employers."                                                                             
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
04    * Section 1. AS 18.80.200 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:                                           
05            (c)  Nothing in this chapter is intended to prohibit a private employer from                                 
06       granting an employment preference to a veteran, or to a spouse or domestic partner of                             
07       a veteran, when hiring an employee. In this subsection,                                                           
08                 (1)  "domestic partner" means a person who is cohabiting with another                                   
09       person in a relationship that is like a marriage but that is not a legal marriage;                                
10                 (2)  "veteran" means a person who was honorably discharged from                                         
11       service in the armed forces of the United States or the Alaska Territorial Guard.                                 
12    * Sec. 2. AS 23 is amended by adding a new chapter to read:                                                        
13                    Chapter 55. Employment of Veterans.                                                                
14            Sec. 23.55.010. Veteran hiring preference allowed. A private employer may                                  

01       grant an employment preference to a veteran, or to a spouse or domestic partner of a                              
02       veteran, when hiring an employee. In this section,                                                                
03                 (1)  "domestic partner" means a person who is cohabiting with another                                   
04       person in a relationship that is like a marriage but that is not a legal marriage;                                
05                 (2)  "veteran" means a person who was honorably discharged from                                         
06       service in the armed forces of the United States or the Alaska Territorial Guard.
