01 "An Act relating to natural and cultural history repositories."                                                         
02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
03    * Section 1. AS 14.40 is amended by adding a new section to read:                                                  
04            Sec. 14.40.072. Natural and cultural history repositories. (a) The University                              
05       of Alaska shall designate the University of Alaska Museum of the North at the                                     
06       Fairbanks campus as a repository of state natural and cultural history collections and                            
07       may designate other repositories as needed.                                                                       
08            (b)  A repository may accept and expend funds, subject to appropriation, from                                
09       any available source including federal and state grants and donations, for the purpose                            
10       of acquiring, cataloging, curating, and preserving state natural and cultural history                             
11       collections.                                                                                                      
12            (c)  To qualify for designation as a repository, a facility must be                                          
13                 (1)  a museum, archeological center, laboratory, or storage facility;                                   
14                 (2)  managed by the state, a municipal government, a tribe, or an                                       
15       educational or scientific institution; and                                                                        

01                 (3)  able to provide long-term professional, systematic, and accountable                                
02       curatorial services.
