01 "An Act extending the annual deadline by which employers are required to deliver                                        
02 layoff or nonretention notices to employees who are tenured teachers."                                                  
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
04    * Section 1. AS 14.20.140(a) is amended to read:                                                                   
05            (a)  If a teacher who has acquired tenure rights is to be laid off under AS                                  
06       14.20.177 or is not to be retained for the following school year, the employer shall                              
07       notify the teacher of the layoff or nonretention by writing, delivered before May 15                          
08       [MARCH 16], or by registered mail postmarked before May 15 [MARCH 16].                                        
09    * Sec. 2. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to                          
10 read:                                                                                                                   
11       APPLICABILITY. AS 14.20.140(a), as amended by sec. 1 of this Act, applies to a                                    
12 contract or collective bargaining agreement that becomes legally binding on or after the                                
13 effective date of this Act.
