00 SENATE CS FOR CS FOR HOUSE BILL NO. 73(FIN) 01 "An Act relating to special fire fighter and emergency medical service provider license 02 plates; relating to special request fraternal organization license plates; and providing for 03 an effective date." 04 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 05 * Section 1. AS 28.10.181 is amended by adding new subsections to read: 06 (z) Special request active fire fighter and emergency medical service provider 07 plates and former fire fighter and emergency medical service provider plates. On 08 application by the owner of a motor vehicle, the department may issue registration 09 plates for active fire fighters and emergency medical service providers and registration 10 plates for former fire fighters and emergency medical service providers. The 11 commissioner shall determine the design and color of the plates. The department may 12 disapprove the issuance of registration plates under this subsection when the requested 13 plates are a duplication of an existing registration. To be eligible for 14 (1) an active fire fighter and emergency medical service provider plate,
01 a person must present satisfactory proof that the person is an active member of 02 (A) a fire department in this state and the fire department is 03 recognized as a fire department by the state fire marshal; or 04 (B) an out-of-hospital emergency medical service certified by 05 the Department of Health and Social Services; 06 (2) a former fire fighter and emergency medical service provider plate, 07 a person must present satisfactory proof that the person was an active member of 08 (A) a fire department in this state for a minimum of 10 years; 09 or 10 (B) an out-of-hospital emergency medical service certified by 11 the Department of Health and Social Services for a minimum of 10 years. 12 (aa) Special request fraternal organization member plates. On the request of a 13 fraternal organization, the department may design a registration plate for the members 14 of that fraternal organization. On application by the owner of a motor vehicle who is a 15 member of that fraternal organization, the department may issue the fraternal 16 organization registration plates to the person. The commissioner shall determine the 17 design and color of the fraternal plates in consultation with the fraternal organization. 18 The department may disapprove the issuance of registration plates under this 19 subsection when the requested plates are a duplication of an existing registration. To 20 be eligible for a fraternal organization member registration plate, a person must 21 present evidence satisfactory to the department of the person's membership in the 22 fraternal organization. In this subsection, "fraternal organization" means a civic, 23 service, or charitable organization in the state, except a college and high school 24 fraternity, not for pecuniary profit, that is a branch, lodge, or chapter of a national 25 organization and exists for the common business, brotherhood, or other interest of its 26 members. 27 * Sec. 2. AS 28.10.421(d) is amended by adding new paragraphs to read: 28 (18) special request plates 29 (A) for active fire fighter and emergency medical service 30 provider..................................................................................................... 31 (B) for former fire fighter and emergency medical service
01 provider..................................................................................................... 02 plus the fee required for that vehicle under (b), (c), (h), or (i) of this section; the fee 03 required by (A) and (B) of this paragraph shall be collected only on the first issuance 04 of and the replacement of the plates; 05 (19) special request fraternal organization member plates............. $50 06 plus the fee required for that vehicle under (b), (c), (h), or (i) of this section; the $50 07 fee required by this paragraph shall be collected only on the first issuance of and the 08 replacement of the plates. 09 * Sec. 3. This Act takes effect July 1, 2010.
