00Enrolled SCR 4 01 Relating to public health and a health compact. 02 _______________ 03 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 WHEREAS good health is a common goal for all Alaskans; and 05 WHEREAS Alaska continues to lead the nation in negative health indicators, 06 including tobacco use and alcohol abuse; and 07 WHEREAS obesity and lack of physical activity can lead to long-term illnesses, such 08 as heart disease, diabetes, and other diseases that require costly and ongoing health care; and 09 WHEREAS health experts point to personal lifestyle choices as the major indicator of 10 a person's health; 11 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature invites all state departments, all 12 local governments, private businesses, nonprofit organizations, and every man, woman, and 13 child of the state to join the Alaska Health Compact; and be it 14 FURTHER RESOLVED that the Alaska Health Compact is an individual and 15 voluntary commitment by each Alaskan to take pride in the healthy choices made to promote 16 personal health and well-being; and be it 17 FURTHER RESOLVED that each Alaskan is encouraged to share, person-to-person

01 or through various media, personal health successes and experiences; and be it 02 FURTHER RESOLVED that individual legislators, as voluntary members of this 03 compact, support choices made to promote personal health and well-being. 04 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Emil Notti, Commissioner, 05 Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development; the Honorable Joe 06 Schmidt, Commissioner, Department of Corrections; the Honorable Roger Sampson, 07 Commissioner, Department of Education and Early Development; the Honorable Karleen 08 Jackson, Commissioner, Department of Health and Social Services; the Honorable Walt 09 Monegan, Commissioner, Department of Public Safety; the Honorable Mark R. Hamilton, 10 President, University of Alaska; and Richard I. Mauer, Chair, State Board of Education and 11 Early Development.
