00                            SENATE BILL NO. 35                                                                          
01 "An Act relating to high school curriculum and graduation requirements."                                                
02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
03    * Section 1.  AS 14.03 is amended by adding a new section to read:                                                 
04            Sec. 14.03.076.  Secondary school first aid graduation requirement.  (a)                                   
05       Each school district shall require, in addition to other minimum courses of study for                             
06       graduation from secondary school, that each student complete a course in basic first                              
07       aid operated or approved by the American Red Cross before a diploma may be issued                                 
08       to the student.                                                                                                   
09            (b)  The requirement under (a) of this section may be waived by the governing                                
10       body of the school district upon proof that a student                                                             
11                 (1)  is incapable of performing the necessary functions for providing                                   
12       first aid;                                                                                                        
13                 (2)  has transferred from a district outside of the state in the student's                              
14       senior year; or                                                                                                   
15                 (3)  is currently certified in first aid.                                                               

01    * Sec. 2.  AS 14.30.360 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:                                             
02            (c)  Each district in the state public school system shall initiate and conduct a                            
03       program operated or approved by the American Red Cross in first aid for secondary                                 
04       school students.
