01 "An Act relating to motor vehicle registration plates and fees for Purple Heart                                         
02 recipients and Medal of Honor recipients; and providing for an effective date."                                         
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
04    * Section 1. AS 28.10.181(l) is amended to read:                                                                   
05            (l)  Vehicles owned by Pearl Harbor survivors, [AND] former prisoners of war,                        
06       and Medal of Honor recipients. The department, upon receipt of written proof, shall                           
07       issue without charge special registration plates for one noncommercial motor vehicle                              
08       to a person who was on active military duty in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941,                                  
09       [OR] who has been a prisoner of war during a declared war or other conflict, as                                   
10       determined by the Department of Defense under federal regulations, or who is the                              
11       recipient of the Medal of Honor awarded by the President of the United States in                              
12       the name of the United States Congress. The design and color of the Pearl Harbor                              
13       survivor, [OR] prisoner of war, or Medal of Honor awarded by the President of the                         
14       United States in the name of the United States Congress recipient plates shall be                             

01       solely within the discretion of the commissioner.                                                                 
02    * Sec. 2.  AS 28.10.421(d)(2) is amended to read:                                                                  
03                 (2)  special request plates for                                                                         
04                      (A)  Alaska National Guard personnel .............................. $30;                           
05                      (B)  veterans or retired veterans ........................................ $30;                    
06                      (C)  recipients of the Purple Heart ..........................none [$30];                      
07                      (D)  owners of custom collector vehicles .......................... $50;                           
08                      (E)  other special request plates ......................................... $30;                   
09            plus the fee required for that vehicle under (b) of this section; the fee required                           
10            by this paragraph shall be collected only on the first issuance and on the                                   
11            replacement of special request plates;                                                                       
12    * Sec. 3. AS 28.10.421(d)(11) is amended to read:                                                                  
13                 (11)  a vehicle owned by a Pearl Harbor survivor, [OR] a former                                     
14       prisoner of war, or a recipient of the Medal of Honor awarded by the President of                             
15       the United States in the name of the United States Congress......................... none;                    
16    * Sec. 4. This Act takes effect immediately under AS 01.10.070(c).
