00 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 28 01 Relating to the socioeconomic impacts of salmon harvesting cooperatives. 02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 03 WHEREAS salmon harvesting cooperatives provide an opportunity to increase the 04 efficiency of the Alaska salmon industry and improve the quality of Alaska salmon products; 05 and 06 WHEREAS salmon harvesting cooperatives create social and economic changes 07 within fishing communities; and 08 WHEREAS the advantages and disadvantages flowing from salmon harvesting 09 cooperatives are difficult to quantify and to distinguish from the effects of broader regional 10 and global trends affecting the Alaska salmon industry and the world market for Alaska 11 salmon; 12 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature respectfully requests the 13 University of Alaska to ask the appropriate unit of the university to perform a socioeconomic 14 study of the effects of salmon harvesting cooperatives on commercial fishermen, processors, 15 Alaska fishing communities, and the State of Alaska; and be it 16 FURTHER RESOLVED that the study be presented to the Alaska State Legislature

01 by November 1, 2004. 02 COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Mark R. Hamilton, 03 President, University of Alaska and to the Board of Regents of the University of Alaska.
