00 SENATE BILL NO. 120 01 "An Act relating to a public school student high school graduation examination; and 02 providing for an effective date." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 14.30.075, added by sec. 1, ch. 58, SLA 1997, is repealed and reenacted to 05 read: 06 Sec. 14.03.075. Academic standards for high school graduation. (a) 07 Before graduating from high school, each student is required to 08 (1) be tested in a graduation examination in the areas of reading, 09 English, and mathematics; and 10 (2) meet academic requirements established by the state and the 11 governing body. 12 (b) The department shall determine the form and contents of the graduation 13 examination and shall score completed examinations. 14 (c) Based on the results of the graduation examination, each student receiving

01 a high school diploma shall receive an endorsement on the diploma as follows: 02 (1) a student who exhibits proficiency in mathematics - a mathematics 03 endorsement; 04 (2) a student who exhibits proficiency in reading - a reading 05 endorsement; 06 (3) a student who exhibits proficiency in writing - a writing 07 endorsement; and 08 (4) a student who is not eligible for an endorsement under (1) - (3) of 09 this subsection - an endorsement consisting of the Alaska flag symbol. 10 (d) The department shall establish by regulation uniform standards for 11 awarding an endorsement required under (c) of this section. 12 * Sec. 2. This Act takes effect January 1, 2002.
