00 HOUSE BILL NO. 202 01 "An Act granting park rangers status as peace officers under the public employees' 02 retirement system; and providing for an effective date." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 39.35.680(28) is amended to read: 05 (28) "peace officer" or "fire fighter" means an employee occupying a 06 position as a peace officer, chief of police, correctional officer, correctional 07 superintendent, fire fighter, fire chief, [OR] probation officer, or park ranger; 08 * Sec. 2. The uncodified law of the State of Alaska is amended by adding a new section to 09 read: 10 CONVERSION OF PAST SERVICE. An employee who was employed as a park 11 ranger in the public employees' retirement system before the effective date of this Act may 12 convert the credited service for that position to credited service as a peace officer by claiming 13 the service as peace officer service before the member is appointed to retirement. When the 14 member claims this retroactive credited service, an indebtedness of the member to the system

01 shall be established. The indebtedness is equal to (1) the contributions to the system that the 02 member would have made if the service had counted as peace officer service, less (2) the 03 contributions to the system that the member actually made. Interest as prescribed by 04 regulation accrues on this indebtedness beginning July 1, 2001. Any outstanding 05 indebtedness that exists at the time the member is appointed to retirement will require an 06 actuarial adjustment to the benefits payable based upon the converted credited service. 07 * Sec. 3. This Act takes effect July 1, 2001.
