00 HOUSE BILL NO. 167 01 "An Act relating to license plates for Alaska National Guard personnel and for antique 02 motor vehicles; relating to gold rush license plates; and providing for an effective date." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 28.10.181(m) is amended to read: 05 (m) Special request plates for Alaska National Guard personnel. Upon 06 application by the owner of a passenger vehicle, noncommercial van or pick-up truck, 07 or motor home who presents satisfactory proof of current membership in the Alaska 08 National Guard, the department may design and issue registration plates that identify 09 the vehicle as registered to a member of the Alaska National Guard. [THE OWNER 10 SHALL RETURN THE REGISTRATION PLATES TO THE DEPARTMENT 11 WITHIN 10 DAYS FOLLOWING DISCHARGE FROM THE ALASKA 12 NATIONAL GUARD.] 13 * Sec. 2. AS 28.10.181 is amended by adding new subsections to read: 14 (v) Antique vehicles. The owner of a passenger car, noncommercial van or

01 pick-up truck, motorcycle, or motor home that was manufactured 30 or more years 02 before the year of application may apply for special registration under this subsection. 03 The department, when satisfied that the vehicle meets requirements for registration 04 under this chapter, shall register the vehicle and allow the vehicle to use registration 05 plates of this state supplied by the vehicle owner that correspond to the year the 06 vehicle was manufactured. The department may disapprove the registration plates if 07 the plates are not legible, are a duplication of an existing registration, or are 08 considered unacceptable by the department. The department may consult with an 09 organization of antique vehicle owners in determining appropriate registration for an 10 antique vehicle under this subsection. 11 (w) Special request gold rush plates. Upon application by the owner of a 12 passenger vehicle, noncommercial van or pick-up truck, or motor home, the 13 department may design and issue registration plates containing a series of not more 14 than six letters or numbers, or a combination of letters and numbers, as requested by 15 the owner and representing the Alaska gold rush as described under 16 AS 28.10.161(b)(1). The department may disapprove the issuance of registration 17 plates under this subsection when the requested plates are a duplication of an existing 18 registration. 19 * Sec. 3. AS 28.10.421(d)(2) is amended to read: 20 (2) special request plates for 21 (A) Alaska National Guard personnel..................................$30; 22 (B) veterans or retired veterans............................................$30; 23 (C) recipients of the Purple Heart.........................................$30; 24 (D) owners of custom collection vehicles............................$50; 25 (E) owners of antique vehicles...........................................$30; 26 (F) other special request plates.............................................$30; 27 plus the fee required for that vehicle under (b) of this section; the fee required 28 by this paragraph shall be collected only on the first issuance and on the replacement 29 of special request plates; 30 * Sec. 4. AS 28.10.421(d) is amended by adding a new paragraph to read: 31 (16) special request gold rush plates ................................................$50

01 plus the fee required for that vehicle under (b)(1) or (2) of this section; the fee 02 required by this paragraph shall be collected only on the first issuance and on the 03 replacement of special request gold rush plates. 04 * Sec. 5. This Act takes effect July 1, 2001.
