00SENATE BILL NO. 314 01 "An Act relating to primary election nominees for governor and lieutenant 02 governor and regulating the nomination of the candidates for those offices whose 03 names shall be placed on the general election ballot; and providing for an 04 effective date." 05 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 06 * Section 1. AS 15.15.030(5) is amended to read: 07  (5) The state general election ballot shall be printed on white paper 08 with the names of the candidates and their party designations placed in separate 09 sections under the office designation to which they were nominated. The party 10 affiliation, if any, shall be designated after the name of the candidate. The lieutenant 11 governor and the governor shall be included under the same section. Provision shall 12 be made for voting for write-in and no-party candidates within each section , except 13 the section designated for the lieutenant governor and the governor . 14 * Sec. 2. AS 15.25.100 is amended to read:

01  Sec. 15.25.100. Placement of nominees on general election ballot. For the 02 offices of United States senator or United States representative and for state 03 legislative offices, the [THE] director shall place on the general election ballot the 04 name of the candidate receiving the highest number of votes for an office by a political 05 party [ON THE GENERAL ELECTION BALLOT]. 06 * Sec. 3. AS 15.25.100 is amended by adding a new subsection to read: 07  (b) For the office of governor, the director shall place on the general election 08 ballot only the names of the candidates for governor receiving the highest number of 09 votes and the second highest number of votes. For the office of lieutenant governor, 10 the director shall place on the general election ballot with a candidate for governor the 11 name of the candidate for lieutenant governor who received the highest number of 12 votes and who is from the same political party as that candidate for governor. 13 * Sec. 4. AS 15.25.205(b) is amended to read: 14  (b) For the offices of governor and lieutenant governor, if a candidate of a 15 political group is the candidate receiving the highest number or second-highest 16 number of votes for the office of governor in the primary, the director shall place 17 on the general election ballot the name of the candidate [OF EACH POLITICAL 18 GROUP RECEIVING THE GREATEST NUMBER OF VOTES FOR THE OFFICE 19 OF GOVERNOR] together with the name of the candidate for lieutenant governor who 20 received the highest [GREATEST] number of votes and who is from the same 21 political group as that candidate. However, the director may not place on the general 22 election ballot the name of the candidate of a political group receiving the highest or 23 second highest [GREATEST] number of votes for the office of 24  (1) governor unless there is also a candidate for lieutenant governor of 25 that political group; 26  (2) lieutenant governor unless there is also a candidate for governor of 27 that political group. 28 * Sec. 5. This Act takes effect January 1, 2001.
