01 "An Act relating to license plates for antique motor vehicles and to gold rush                                          
02 license plates; and providing for an effective date."                                                                   
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                               
04    * Section 1.  AS 28.10.181 is amended by adding new subsections to read:                                           
05  (v)  Antique vehicles.  The owner of a passenger car, noncommercial van or                                            
06 pick-up truck, motorcycle, or motor home that was manufactured 30 or more years                                         
07 before the year of application may apply for special registration under this subsection.                                
08 The department, when satisfied that the vehicle meets requirements for registration                                     
09 under this chapter, shall register the vehicle and allow the vehicle to use registration                                
10 plates of this state corresponding to the year the vehicle was manufactured.  The                                       
11 department may disapprove the registration plates if the plates are not legible, are a                                  
12 duplication of an existing registration, or are considered unacceptable by the                                          
13 department.  The department may consult with an organization of antique vehicle                                         
14 owners in determining appropriate registration for an antique vehicle under this                                        

01 subsection.                                                                                                             
02  (w)  Special request gold rush plates.  Upon application by the owner of a                                            
03 passenger vehicle, noncommercial van or pick-up truck, or motor home, the department                                    
04 may design and issue registration plates containing a series of not more than six letters                               
05 or numbers, or a combination of letters and numbers, as requested by the owner and                                      
06 representing the Alaska gold rush as described under AS 28.10.161(b)(1).  The                                           
07 department may disapprove the issuance of registration plates under this subsection                                     
08 when the requested plates are a duplication of an existing registration.                                                
09    * Sec. 2.  AS 28.10.421(d)(2) is amended to read:                                                                  
10   (2)  special request plates for                                                                                      
11   (A)  Alaska National Guard personnel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $30;                                   
12   (B)  veterans or retired veterans. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $30;                                   
13   (C)  recipients of the Purple Heart. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $30;                                   
14   (D)  owners of custom collection vehicles. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $50;                                   
15   (E)  owners of antique vehicles . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $30;                                   
16   (F)   other special request plates. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $30;                                   
17 plus the fee required for that vehicle under (b) of this section; the fee required by this                             
18 paragraph shall be collected only on the first issuance and on the replacement of                                       
19 special request plates;                                                                                                 
20    * Sec. 3.  AS 28.10.421(d) is amended by adding a new paragraph to read:                                           
21   (16)  special request gold rush plates  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$50                                   
22 plus the fee required for that vehicle under (b)(1) or (2) of this section; the fee                                    
23 required by this paragraph shall be collected only on the first issuance and on the                                     
24 replacement of special request gold rush plates.                                                                        
25    * Sec. 4.  This Act takes effect July 1, 2000.
