00HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 16                                                                                           
01 Relating to a federal balanced budget amendment.                                                                        
02 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                               
03  WHEREAS it is in the national interest for the federal government to live within its                                   
04 means; and                                                                                                              
05  WHEREAS eliminating the national deficit and controlling national government                                           
06 spending could be accomplished by the passage of a balanced budget amendment by the                                     
07 United States Congress and ratification of the amendment by the states of the Union;                                    
08  BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature urges the United States Congress                                      
09 to pass, and the President to support, a resolution proposing an amendment to the United                                
10 States Constitution that requires the balancing of the federal budget; and be it                                        
11  FURTHER RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature urges the legislature of                                            
12 each state of the nation to ratify a balanced budget amendment that is passed by the United                             
13 States Congress.                                                                                                        
14  COPIES of this resolution shall be sent to the Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the                                

01 United States; the Honorable Al Gore, Jr., Vice-President of the United States and President                            
02 of the U.S. Senate; to the Honorable Strom Thurmond, President Pro Tempore of the U.S.                                  
03 Senate; to the Honorable Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives; to                                
04 the Honorable Ted Stevens and the Honorable Frank Murkowski, U.S. Senators, and the                                     
05 Honorable Don Young, U.S. Representative, members of the Alaska delegation in Congress;                                 
06 and to the presiding officer of each house of each state of the United States.
