00SENATE BILL NO. 256 01 "An Act relating to the offices of mayor and mayor pro tempore of a second 02 class city." 03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 * Section 1. AS 29.20.230 is amended by adding a new subsection to read: 05  (d) Notwithstanding (b) of this section, a second class city may by ordinance 06 provide that the mayor is elected by the voters rather than by the council. If an 07 ordinance is adopted under this subsection, the council shall meet on the first Monday 08 after certification of each regular election and elect a council member to serve as 09 mayor pro tempore who takes office immediately and exercises the powers and duties 10 of mayor until the permanent mayor takes office. Within 30 days after certification 11 of a regular election, a special election shall be held for the permanent mayor. The 12 permanent mayor takes office on the first Monday following certification of the special 13 election and serves until the first Monday after certification of the next regular 14 election.
