00HOUSE BILL NO. 88 01 "An Act changing the minimum school age from six years of age to five years 02 of age; providing that a five year old child is entitled to attend a public school 03 kindergarten; changing the ages at which a child is required to attend public 04 school; relating to provision of educational opportunities; and providing for an 05 effective date." 06 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 07 * Section 1. AS 14.03.070 is amended to read: 08  Sec. 14.03.070. SCHOOL AGE. A child who is at least five [SIX] years of 09 age before August 15 following the beginning of the school year, and who is under the 10 age of 20 and has not completed the 12th grade, is of school age. 11 * Sec. 2. AS 14.03.080(d) is amended to read: 12  (d) A child who is five years of age before August 15 following the beginning 13 of the school year is entitled to [, AND WHO IS UNDER SCHOOL AGE, MAY] 14 enter a public school kindergarten.

AS 14.07.020(a)(12) is amended to read: 02  (12) provide educational opportunities in the areas of vocational 03 education and training, and basic education to individuals over 18 [16] years of age 04 who are no longer attending school; 05 * Sec. 4. AS 14.30.010(a) is amended to read: 06  (a) Every child who is at least five years of age before August 15 following 07 the beginning of the school year and not more than 18 [BETWEEN SEVEN AND 08 16] years of age shall attend school at the public school in the district in which the 09 child resides during each school term. Every parent, guardian or other person having 10 the responsibility for or control of a child who is at least five years of age before 11 August 15 following the beginning of the school year and not more than 18 12 [BETWEEN SEVEN AND 16] years of age shall maintain the child in attendance at 13 a public school in the district in which the child resides during the entire school term, 14 except as provided in (b) of this section. 15 * Sec. 5. This Act takes effect July 1, 1995.
