01 "An Act relating to the village public safety officers program."                                                        
02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
03    * Section 1.  AS 18.65 is amended by adding a new section to read:                                                   
04  Sec. 18.65.087.  VILLAGE PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICERS PROGRAM.  (a)                                                         
05 There is established in the Department of Public Safety, division of state troopers, the                                
06 village public safety officers program for the purpose of providing basic public safety                                 
07 and law enforcement services to rural communities in the state.  The commissioner of                                    
08 public safety may enter into contracts to provide these services under the program.                                     
09  (b)  The commissioner of public safety shall by regulation establish training                                         
10 requirements, criteria for participation by communities in the village public safety                                    
11 officers program, and minimum standards for officers who provide basic public safety                                    
12 and law enforcement services under the program.  The commissioner may adopt other                                       
13 regulations necessary to implement the program.
