01 "An Act relating to recognition of individual veterans along certain veterans' memorial                                 
02 roads and on certain veterans' memorial bridges."                                                                       
03 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
04    * Section 1. AS 35.40.035 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:                                           
05 (g)  The Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs shall accept nominations                                          
06 from veterans' organizations to name a portion of a road or bridge described in this                                    
07 section for an individual veteran. On the first day of each legislative session, the                                    
08 Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs shall submit to the president of the                                       
09 senate and the speaker of the house of representatives a list of nominations received                                   
10 under this subsection. The legislature may commend one or more nominees submitted                                       
11 under this subsection in accordance with the provisions for adopting citations under                                    
12 the uniform rules of the legislature. The Department of Transportation and Public                                       
13 Facilities may designate a portion of a road or bridge for an individual veteran                                        
14 commended by the legislature and make arrangements for the designing and posting of                                     
01 signs and other markers. The Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs and the                                       
02 Department of Transportation and Public Facilities may accept gifts, donations, and                                     
03 grants for the purpose of establishing and maintaining signs under this subsection. The                                 
04 Department of Transportation and Public Facilities may not post or maintain a sign or                                   
05 other marker unless it has been funded by gifts, donations, or grants received under                                    
06 this subsection. In this subsection, "veteran" means a person who served in the                                         
07       uniformed services and who received an honorable discharge.                                                       
08    * Sec. 2. AS 37.05.146(b) is amended by adding a new paragraph to read:                                            
09 (90)  gifts, donations, and grants received by the Department of                                                        
10       Transportation and Public Facilities or the Department of Military and Veterans'                                  
11       Affairs for the purpose of establishing and maintaining signs under AS 35.40.035(g).
