01 "An Act relating to a voluntary preference for veterans by private employers."                                          
02 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:                                                                
03    * Section 1. AS 18.80.200 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:                                           
04            (c)  Nothing in this chapter is intended to prohibit a private employer from                                 
05 granting an employment preference to a veteran when hiring an employee. In this                                         
06 subsection, "veteran" means a person who was honorably discharged from service in                                       
07                 (1)  the armed forces of the United States;                                                             
08                 (2)  a reserve unit of the armed forces of the United States;                                           
09                 (3)  the Alaska Territorial Guard;                                                                      
10                 (4)  the Alaska Army National Guard;                                                                    
11                 (5)  the Alaska Air National Guard; or                                                                  
12                 (6)  the Alaska Naval Militia.                                                                          
13    * Sec. 2. AS 23 is amended by adding a new chapter to read:                                                        
14                    Chapter 55. Employment of Veterans.                                                                
15            Sec. 23.55.010. Veteran hiring preference allowed. A private employer may                                  
01       grant an employment preference to a veteran when hiring an employee. In this section,                             
02       "veteran" means a person who was honorably discharged from service in                                             
03                 (1)  the armed forces of the United States;                                                             
04                 (2)  a reserve unit of the armed forces of the United States;                                           
05                 (3)  the Alaska Territorial Guard;                                                                      
06                 (4)  the Alaska Army National Guard;                                                                    
07                 (5)  the Alaska Air National Guard; or                                                                  
08                 (6)  the Alaska Naval Militia.
