00 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 21 01 Proposing amendments to the Constitution of the State of Alaska relating to terms of 02 legislators. 03 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04  * Section 1. Article II, sec. 3, Constitution of the State of Alaska, is amended to read: 05 Section 3. Election and Terms. Legislators shall be elected at general 06 elections. Their terms begin on the fourth Monday of the January following election 07 unless otherwise provided by law. The term of representatives shall be two years, and 08 the term of senators, four years. One-half of the senators shall be elected every two 09 years. No person who has served as a representative for four full or partial  10 successive terms shall again be eligible to hold that office until one full term has  11 intervened. No person who has served as a senator for two full or partial  12 successive terms shall again be eligible to hold that office until one full term has  13 intervened. 14  * Sec. 2. Article XV, Constitution of the State of Alaska, is amended by adding a new 15 section to read: 16 Section 30. Application of 2016 Tenure Amendment. The 2016 amendments 01 limiting legislators' terms of office do not 02 (1) prohibit a legislator from serving the term of office that the 03 legislator was reelected to in the 2016 general election; or 04 (2) prematurely end the term of a legislator who is serving on the 05 effective date of the amendment. 06  * Sec. 3. The amendments proposed by this resolution shall be placed before the voters of the 07 state at the next general election in conformity with art. XIII, sec. 1, Constitution of the State of 08 Alaska, and the election laws of the state.
