00 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 12 01 Commemorating Congressman Don Young's 30 years of service in the House of 02 Representatives of the United States Congress. 03 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA: 04 WHEREAS Congressman Don Young was born in Meridian, California, on June 9, 05 1933, and, after serving in the United States Army 41st Tank Battalion, he moved to Alaska in 06 1959; and 07 WHEREAS he made his home in Fort Yukon, where he met his wife, Lu, with whom 08 he has two daughters and nine grandchildren, and which continues to be the Young's primary 09 residence; and  10 WHEREAS, in Fort Yukon, he served on the city council, as mayor, and was elected 11 to the State House of Representatives in 1966, and was later elected to the State Senate in 12 1970, where he served until he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in a 13 special election on March 5, 1973; and 14 WHEREAS, in 1973, his first year in the United States House of Representatives, 15 Congressman Young successfully worked for legislation authorizing the Trans Alaska 16 Pipeline, which led to the oil development in Prudhoe Bay; and 01 WHEREAS Congressman Young served as Chair of the Resources Committee of the 02 United States House of Representatives for six years, a committee that has jurisdiction over 03 federal lands, fisheries, wildlife, energy and minerals, forests, and Native American issues; 04 and 05 WHEREAS, as Alaska's lone vote in the United States House of Representatives, his 06 leadership on key issues has twice led to passage of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge 07 development legislation through the United States House; and 08 WHEREAS he has worked to improve the Magnuson Fishery Act, Alaska resource 09 development, and funding for rural Alaska projects, and has been a vigilant protector of 10 Second Amendment Rights; and 11 WHEREAS Congressman Young is Alaska's only member in the 435-member United 12 States House of Representatives and is currently the fourth highest ranking Republican in total 13 seniority and the ninth highest ranking member of the United States House of Representatives 14 in total seniority; and 15 WHEREAS Congressman Young is currently serving in his 16th term in the United 16 States House of Representatives and is currently serving in his third year as Chair of the 17 Transportation and Infrastructure Committee of the United States House of Representatives, 18 poised to continue his strong record of accomplishment for all of Alaska; 19 BE IT RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature expresses its sincere gratitude 20 to Congressman Don Young for his three decades of service to all the people of Alaska and to 21 his nation; and be it 22 FURTHER RESOLVED that the Alaska State Legislature, on behalf of the people of 23 Alaska, extends its best wishes to Congressman Don Young and his wife, Lu, as he continues 24 his service as "Congressman for all Alaska."
